6 Injured in Brooklyn Fire That Forced 2 Men to Jump From Building: FDNY

WNBC 4 – July 06, 2015

Six people were injured, one critically, in an early morning fire in Brooklyn that witnesses said forced two men to jump from the third floor window of an apartment building.

One man dove onto a mattress that neighbors placed on the sidewalk under the window at 2126 Nostrand Avenue in East Flatbush, according to witnesses. Another man jumped out the window onto the awning of a Caribbean restaurant below.

The fire started on the third floor of the building around 2 a.m., according to fire officials. Six people were injured and one was in critical condition, officials said. The victims were taken to Staten Island North for treatment.

Several others who were inside the building at the time of the fire were able to make it out safely.

Neighbors tried to warn residents when they saw flames shooting out of the windows by knocking on several doors inside the building. “I went upstairs first and two other guys came behind me,” Taliq Thomas said. “We were like banging on doors, telling people to come out.”

Officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
