Two little girls are set to take the mound at Citi Field on Wednesday night, and they are bringing their own cheering section.
More than 150 active and retired members of the FDNY and their families will be on hand to see six-year-old Gabriela and nine-year-old Giovanna Ambelas— the daughters of fallen FDNY Lt. Gordon “Matt” Ambelas— throw the first pitch as the Mets take on the San Francisco Giants.
“They know we will always be there to support them,” said FDNY Capt. Andrew Morgan.
Ambelas, 40, was mortally injured last July while searching for victims during a dangerous fire in a cluttered Williamsburg apartment with members of Ladder 119.
The FDNY veteran was a natural mentor to younger firefighters said Morgan.
“He had that personality that was easy going and easy to talk to,” said Morgan. “He was well respected and knew what he was doing.”
The event was organized by the NY Police & Fire Widows’ & Children’s Benefit Fund, which was founded by Mets legend Rusty Staub.
The organization provides scholarships for the families of fallen first responders and also hosts parties and outings.
“This is going to be a really special night that the girls will never forgot,” said Nanette Ambelas, the fire hero’s widow. “The fact that so many of Matt’s fellow firefighters and their families have taken it upon themselves to attend and cheer them on makes this extra special.”
