BROOKLYN — More than 100 firefighters battled a fire in the basement of a Windsor Terrace home Thursday morning, officials said.
The flames broke out inside 276 Windsor Terrace, near 11th Avenue, about 10:40 a.m. and filled the street with gray smoke, according to witnesses and FDNY officials.
“I went outside to a cloud of smoke and it was hard to breathe,” said Miriam Mahmood, who works in an office nearby. “Neighbors were out, all looking, trying to see what was going on.
“It was loud, but not chaotic. The fire department really handled everything,” she added.
About 105 firefighters brought the fire under control at nearly 11:06 a.m., an FDNY spokesman said.
Six firefighters were treated at Methodist and Maimonides hospitals, officials said.
A civilian refused medical attention at the scene, officials said.
Some students at nearby P.S. 154 were finishing off a math test when the commotion began, said Elana Rabinowitz, a teacher at school.
“We simply closed the windows and had the students stay inside for lunch,” Rabinowitz said.
“To be honest, I don’t even think they realized what was going on. City kids are so used to sirens,” she added.
