MANHATTAN (PIX11)– While most of All-Star Weekend is naturally about the NBA All-Stars, Sunday was about New York’s All-Stars at the Barclays Center for the annual New York Heroes Game. The FDNY and NYPD played each other in hard-fought game on the hardwood for bragging rights, with New York’s finest claiming a 40-33 victory.
Both say the rivalry is a amiable one, but their competition definitely has some bite.
“It’s friendly rivalry,” Jimmy Kennedy from the FDNY said. “Yeah it’s competition, they knocked over one of our girls.”
Joe Alohan of Brooklyn’s 70th Precinct says despite the competition, he just wanted to play his best at the Barclays Center.
“It’s all love in the city,” Alohan said. “It’s awesome, it’s a beautiful arena and it’s great to be playing here in front of the city.”
FDNY coach and host of Boomer & Carton show, Boomer Esiason was just happy to be part of the event.
“It’s New York heroes,” Esiason said. “It’s Bravest v. Finest, it doesn’t get any better than that.”
“The NBA is showing a lot of love for the people who protect our community,” he said.
Boomer’s co-host and coach of the NYPD Craig Carton was happy with his selection of teams.
“I got first choice because I invited Boomer to be a part of this great event and I wasn’t not going to go with the NYPD,” Carton said. “With all due respect to the FDNY.”
Both teams took home $35,000 for their respective charities.
