Fire Commissioner Promotes 30 Fire Officers

On Wednesday, April 12th, FDNY Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro promoted 30 Fire Officers to the rank of Lieutenant at Brooklyn College.

Commissioner Nigro highlighted the 1.7 million emergencies FDNY Members responded to last year – ranging from fires, medical calls, water rescues, and trapped patients. He stated, “the work our members do is nothing short of extraordinary, and I am immensely proud every day to serve as your Commissioner because I am blessed with a workforce that is second to none.”

“Know that when our Department is referred to as the best in the world, it’s not only because of our storied history and the heroes who came before us,” said Commissioner Nigro. “It’s also because of all of you who serve today and continue to set the very high standard for all others to follow.”

Chief of Department James E. Leonard underscored the ingrained principle of leadership in the Department.

“You’re taking the hard-earned reputation of the FDNY and you’re building upon it,” said Chief Leonard. “We all learned from great leaders who came before us – those Firefighters who helped teach us and show us the way. Now it’s your turn to lead – it’s your turn to pay it forward.”

FDNY Lieutenant Frank Floridia was promoted today. He highlighted the hard work and dedication required to become a NYC Firefighter and Lieutenant. “It’s not easy to get promoted, this is something you have to work hard for,” said Lieutenant Floridia. “I’m looking forward to learning new things and challenging myself every single day.” Lieutenant Floridia received the Thomas E. Crimmins Medal for his heroic efforts in rescuing two patients from a burning building in Brooklyn on January 21, 2015.

FDNY Lieutenant Daniel T. Flanagan is a fourth generation Firefighter. He and his brother, Brian Flanagan (L-44) – followed their father’s footsteps in joining the FDNY. “My father just retired two months ago as an FDNY Lieutenant with thirty-nine years of service, and I’m proud to carry on the name,” said Lieutenant Daniel Flanagan.

Lieutenant Daniel Flanagan underscored the great responsibility of becoming a Lieutenant. “Firefighters will turn to us to make decisions and it’s our priority and duty to ensure their safety and the safety of everyone going home,” said Lieutenant Flanagan.

Lieutenant Zeyar Tun highlighted the great camaraderie of his company and great traditions of the Department. “This is the greatest job in the world and I’m doing what I love. The atmosphere at my Firehouse is amazing and everyone here is just so supportive,” said Lieutenant Tun. “ It’s very important to me to do right by the members and uphold the traditions of the Department. I’m very happy to have this opportunity.”
