On Mar. 16, 23 York College students got the opportunity to work with members of the Fire Department of New York on Candidate Physical Agility testing.
York’s Office of Recruitment and Retention held an FDNY Mobile Academy Event in the Health and Physical Education Complex. The event was hosted by Mobile, and was open to all students interested in a career with the fire department.
Upon arrival students were greeted by Adam Lessuck, the Veterans and Military outreach coordinator who provided all the basic information about the FDNY and Firefighter Aaron Gardner who spoke to the students about the benefits of joining the FDNY.
“Imagine having 6 weeks paid vacation and unlimited sick leave,” said Gardner. “This has to be the best job to have.”
Physical Education major Travis Rivera, said he was happy he attended the event.
“I’ve been involved in the fire department since I was 11,” said Rivera. “I’ve always wanted to join the FDNY and I plan to take the test but I will be graduating as a Physical Education teacher next year.”
The firefighters made students drag hoses, practice forcible entry, equipment carry, donning of bunker gear, and dummy drag.
Students who are interested can go online to the FDNY website or contact the Athletic Director, Denee Barracato. Applications for FDNY will be available on April 5 and prospective firefighters must prepare for the next CPAT coming up in September. All applicants must be under the age of 29, have their high school diploma or GED, and at least 15 college credits.
