Manhole Explosions Reported On Upper East Side: FDNY

Loud booms were heard Tuesday night in the vicinity of East 74th Street and First Avenue.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY  Loud booms heard Tuesday night on the Upper East Side were caused by exploding manhole covers, an FDNY spokesman told Patch.

Several manholes in the vicinity of East 74th Street and First Avenue were smoking Tuesday night and fire officials believe a few exploded, the FDNY spokesman said. There were no injuries reported and fire officials currently do not know what caused the explosions, the spokesman told Patch.
