A fire broke out at a church in Brooklyn Thursday evening, destroying the interior just days before the new year, officials said.

Fire officials say the blaze began around 5:45p.m. in the back of The Truth Center of Divine Awareness on Ralph Avenue near Herkimer street and was put out shortly before 8p.m. No injuries were reported.

The building, is formerly a supermarket, converted to a house of worship and holds a weekly service every Sunday.

Reverend of the non-denominational church, Marva Edmonds expressed anguish over the damage, “This is the worst way to start the new year. I’m not even sure when the next Sunday service will be.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
