STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.—The Great Kills fire that displaced two families Sunday was accidental, according to an FDNY spokesman.

Someone was smoking a cigarette in the house that inadvertently ignited the two-alarm fire, he said.

The blaze, which started just before 2 p.m. at 115 Nelson Avenue, caused severe damage to the two-family home directly across the street from St. Clare’s R.C. Church, fire chiefs on scene said.

A Red Cross worker on scene said 11 people — a family of seven and a family of four — who lived in the home were displaced and needed a temporary place to stay.

The South Beach brush fire that happened on Wentworth Avenue Monday night is still under investigation, the spokesman said.

That fire broke out around 10:15 p.m. just off of Olympia Boulevard.

The main body of the fire was knocked down within an hour, but units continued operating for another 40 minutes before it was entirely under control, he said.
