LIRR Commuters Could Face Delays After Fire Near Penn Station

CBS 2 – January 13, 2015

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) – Commuters could face some delays following an early morning fire near Penn Station that officials say is suspicious.

The fire broke out at 2:22 a.m. in an underground construction site at 34th Street and Eighth Avenue. It was under control at 5:22 a.m.

“Upon arrival, we found heavy fire conditions in the construction area in the West End Concourse of the LIRR,” FDNY Chief James Leonard said. “We had two levels of fire down there, an extensive amount of fire which did cause structural damage to the station.”

Leonard said nearly 150 firefighters responded to the scene. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries.

Trains on the A, E and C subway lines, which had been bypassing 34th Street, resumed service through the area at 5:38 a.m. with residual delays.

Long Island Rail Road service isn’t affected. However, a transit spokesman says three tracks weren’t operational after power was shut down during the fire. Commuters could face some delays if it’s not restored in time.

LIRR customers should also anticipate some trains being diverted to Atlantic Terminal or Hunterspoint Avenue as well as some trains being canceled in Jamaica.
