Two firemen sprang into action after seeing two women and their babies in trouble during a two-alarm fire in Rockaway Beach.
According to a report by the NY Daily News, firefighters were called to Rockaway Beach at 2:20 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 4, in response to a fire at Beach 91st St. near Rockaway Beach Blvd. Upon their arrival, they found that the fire had made its way through two floors of the three-story building, and was closing in on the top floor.
The FDNY was able to bring the fire down to a two-alarm fire by 2:40 a.m. and had it completely under control by 3 a.m. An investigation found that the building didn’t have any working smoke detectors.
Two firefighters in particular, Lieutenants Sean Hayden of Ladder Company 121 and Joe Costa of Ladder Comapny 137, reportedly jumped into action after seeing two women holding babies on the third floor. One woman was spotted straddling the window sill and was apparently looking for someone to drop her baby to. A pregnant woman with an infant was standing behind her.
Both fireman ran up to the third floor and rescued the babies and the women.
Reports say that 15 people were injured in the fire. A candle that was left unattended on the second floor is said to be the cause of the fire.
