Brooklynites out enjoying Sunday’s pleasant weather got a surprise when a fire ignited in a wooded area in Prospect Park.
Three engines and one ladder responded to a call at Prospect Park West and 9th Street at approximately 3:19pm Sunday afternoon, the FDNY states. The fire was under control just after 6pm.
There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Big thanks @FDNY for rapid response to brush fire @prospect_park. Quick work to save Brooklyn’s only native forest.
While the FDNY was able to get the fire under control quickly, it certainly looked like a dramatic scene.
Many visitors to the park posted photos on social media showing mostly fire trucks and clouds of smoke. NYC Council Member Brad Lander gave a shout-out to the FDNY on Twitter, thanking them for their quick response “to save Brooklyn’s only native forest.”
