FDNY: 25 firefighters hurt battling blaze in lower Manhattan building

The 23 firefighters who were hospitalized at the scene of a blaze Friday night — a block from New York City Hall — were treated and released by Saturday morning, according to the FDNY.

The fire, which raged on the upper levels of a five-story building in lower Manhattan, sent plumes of black smoke shooting into the air as nearly 200 FDNY firefighters worked to douse the flames, officials said.

In addition to the 23 injured firefighters, who were brought to Bellevue Hospital Center with minor injuries, two others were treated only at the scene.

An investigation into the cause remained unfinished as of Saturday afternoon, according to the FDNY.

The streets near the building, at Murray and Church streets, were cordoned off beginning about 7 p.m. Friday for more than three hours when the fire was brought under control.

The fire had spread upward quickly because of the voids between the floors, an FDNY spokeswoman said.

At least one adjoining building showed some damage, a video posted online by the FDNY showed.
