NYPD takes on FDNY at Yankee Stadium Sunday
The NYPD soccer team takes on its FDNY counterparts in the annual friendly match between the two rivals at Yankee Stadium Sunday.
This charity game between the teams will be held after New York City FC’s final regular-season game against the Columbus Crew at 4 p.m.
This will be the first time that the stadium will host confrontation between new York’s finest and bravest, a game that will raise money and awareness of the team’s respective charities.
The NYPD, which plays in the Cosmopolitan Soccer League, are raising awareness for the NYPD: Widow’s & Children’s Funds. That charity has provided aid and assistance to widows, widowers and eligible dependents of police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
Joe Brosi is the head coach and manager.

The FDNY, which performs in the Long Island Soccer Football League, hopes to use the match to spread awareness of The Sergio Villanueva Soccer Foundation, which was set up to recognize the late Sergio Villanueva, the FDNY team’s No. 10 and central midfielder. Velasquez died at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. The charity serves a way to educate the community on the tragedy and recognizes the hard work of those who lost their lives that day.
Through the foundation, the FDNY soccer team has set up youth soccer clinics globally for more than 3,000 children. Locations include Hempstead, N.Y., Exeter City, England, Baumholder, Germany and Rome, Italy, among others.
The FDNY squad is coached by Carlos Villacres. Ron Meija is the manager.
