STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Two people were seriously injured when an FDNY rig collided with a car while firefighters were on their way to a smoke condition at the Christmas Tree Shop in Charleston on Friday morning.
The crash occurred at Englewood Avenue and Veterans Road West, said a spokesman for the FDNY/EMS. The injured, who were in the car, suffered injuries that were not life threatening and were transported to Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze, said the FDNY spokesman. No firefighters were harmed.
A “jaws-of-life” Hurst tool had to be used to remove one of the victims from the car, the FDNY spokesman said. The crash site is near the West Shore Expressway Englewood Avenue exit.
FDNY members were en route to an electrical condition that was reported at 10:22 a.m. at the Christmas Tree Shop located in the Bricktown Centre mall at 2700 Veterans Road West, the FDNY spokesman said.
An overheated light ballast caused smoke in the store.
FDNY will cut off power to the fixture on an emergency basis and then the store will have to hire an electrician to make repairs, according to the FDNY.
