STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Firefighters extinguished a large brush fire Monday evening at the former Freshkills landfill site, according to a city Sanitation Department spokesman.

The fire appears to have started at Schmul Park in Travis, with the wind then carrying the flames into parts of the former landfill, the spokesman said.

The brush fire was approximately 1 mile wide.

Firefighters responded to the call at 6:20 p.m. at Wild Avenue and East Service Road, an FDNY spokesman said, bringing the fire under control about an hour later.

There were no reported injuries.

The former landfill site is currently being transformed into Freshkills Park — a sprawling public recreation space.
