NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The FDNY celebrated 100 years of dedicated service by Rescue Company 1 on Sunday. The Manhattan-based company was organized on March 8, 1915. It’s now one of five rescue companies that respond when there is a need for specialized equipment and training.
Rescue 1 Capt. Robert Morris told 1010 WINS the fire department held a company party to celebrate the milestone.
“We did have people outside today and the reason for that is because we couldn’t fit everyone inside the firehouse,” Morris said. “We anticipated that and we had a tent outside. The nice weather definitely helps.”
Morris said many former members of the company joined in the celebration.
“We had members here who were at the 23rd Street fire, which was a major fire we had back in the 60s where we lost a good number of firemen there,” he said.
Rescue 1 lost nearly half of its company of firefighters in the aftermath of the 9/11 terror attacks on the World Trade Center. Morris said some family members of those firemen were also in attendance Sunday.
