The newest members of the city’s bravest were sworn in Monday. Mayor Bill de Blasio and Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro led the ceremony for 320 probationary firefighters.
The “probies,” as they are called, will begin their four-and-a-half month training period.
At the end of their training, they will join what de Blasio calls the best firefighting force in the world.
The mayor says the newest recruits have already done something special.
“You made the choice to serve, you made the choice to serve others you don’t even know, but whose humanity you are here to protect. And that is an extraordinarily noble choice,” said de Blasio.
“The boots of heroes are difficult to fill. Do not take this swearing in lightly. ‘I swear, I promise, I fully commit.’ It’s not only for 40 hours a week either. It’s for 24 hours a day, seven days a week forever,” said Nigro.
This new class is the most diverse the Fire Department has ever had.
About 45 percent of those recruits are either women or people of color.
The class also includes more than 50 military vets, and 13 EMTs or paramedics who passed a promotional exam to the rank of firefighters.
