FDNY, emergency workers respond to large brush fire in Elm Park Saturday night

STATEN ISLAND, NY. – Several firefighters and emergency workers responded to a  large brush fire in Elm Park late Saturday night.

The blaze ignited in the woods behind 150 Morningstar Road, an FDNY spokesman said.

Besides brush, there was old furniture, tires and lots of debris burning along the railroad cut behind the location, according to FDNY Deputy Chief William Tanzosh.

“There was a lot of stuff to burn,” Tanzosh said. “People were just dumping stuff back there. It’s still smoldering and just needs to be cleaned out.”

There were no injuries, the deputy chief said.

The emergency call came in at 9:21 p.m. and the fire was under control about an hour later, the spokesman said. The cause is still under investigation.

This was the third brush fire this week on the borough.
