An improperly disposed lithium battery was to blame for the five-alarm fire in Jamaica, Queens, that brought four branches of the Long Island Rail Road to a halt Friday afternoon.

New York City Fire Department marshals identified the battery as the source of the outdoor blaze at the recycling plant at 187-40 Jamaica Ave., which began before 1 p.m. Friday and was stoked by strong winds into Saturday, firefighter Chris Berke said Saturday.
