THE BRONX – A memorial Mass on Saturday honored the lives of the three firefighters killed in the line of duty in a Bronx fire 13 years ago.
Lt. Curtis W, Meyran, John G. Bellew and Joseph P DiBernardo were forced to jump to their deaths on Jan. 23, 2005 after becoming trapped in a raging fire at an apartment building on East 178th Street in what became known as “Black Sunday.”
Two firefighters who were badly injured in the Bronx blaze on that day 13 years ago say that it is vital to keep the memory of their friends alive.
“Remembering their sacrifice and what they did, a few of us, myself was injured that day very seriously, and happy to be here, but remembering the guys that aren’t here,” says Eugene Stolowski, Ladder 27 firefighter.
The firefighters and family members tell News 12 they look forward to continuing the event for years to come.
