A Bronx teen drowned Wednesday evening while swimming in waters off of a Far Rockaway beach known for its unsafe currents, officials said. Keith Johnson, 19, went into the ocean near Beach 17th Street at 6:30 p.m., half an hour after lifeguards went off duty, police said. Cops found Johnson at 8:50 p.m., and tried to resuscitate him. “She was saying ‘Help my boyfriend, help my boyfriend, he can not swim, ‘ so me and a couple guys went right around”, Junior Gomez tells CBS2’s Reena Roy. He was pronounced dead at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. “That was my friend and we went to the beach together”, a woman said. For nearly two hours, air and marine units from the NYPD and the FDNY searched the waters and were joined by fire departments from Long Beach, Inwood and Lawrence-Cedarhurst. Firefighters from the FDNY and Long Island along with the NYPD all mobilized to save Johnson. A friend of his who watched him go under the water called for help. They located the missing swimmer and brought him to shore. Newburgh Gazette http://newburghgazette.com/2017/08/24/man-19-dies-after-being-recovered-from-waters-off-queens/
