Edgecombe Avenue was closed from West 165th St. to West 170th St., authorities said.
WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — A large sinkhole opened up in Washington Heights early Monday morning, trapping two cars and shutting down a five-block stretch of Edgecomb Avenue.
The sinkhole appeared at 444 West 167th St., according to an FDNY spokesman told Patch. The FDNY was alerted to the sinkhole, which was caused by a water main break, at 3:34 a.m., the FDNY said.
The two cars were removed, and the situation was under control shortly after 5 a.m., the spokesman said. No injuries were reported.
The city’s office of emergency management tweeted that Edgecomb was closed between West 165th St. to West 170th St. The roads remained closed Monday morning.
