Twelve people were hospitalized, including four firefighters, after a fast-moving fire swept through a Bronx house Saturday night, authorities said.
One person was removed in critical condition from the blaze that started at about 6:30 p.m. on the first floor of a two-story home on University Ave. and W. 195th St. in Kingsbridge, an FDNY spokesman said.
Around 100 smoke-eaters worked for more than an hour to put out the flames — which crept up to the second floor and attic, blackening window frames and walls.
In addition to the person fire officials said was critically hurt, 11 others, including the firefighters, were treated for smoke inhalation, officials said.
Danny Marchena, 26, whose family lives in the house, said that all the people removed were okay, though the fire department did not confirm that.
FDNY officials told the family that an electrical appliance ignited and set a mattress ablaze, he said.
Neighbor Ted Kefalinos, 52, said the fire went throughout the house in a flash.
“It just kept going and going,” said Kefalinos, who lives across the street.
