STATEN ISLAND N.Y. — How do you make kids aware about fire safety in the kitchen? You make chocolate-covered fruit kabobs, of course.
Staten Island University Hospital and NYC TV’s Ray Cooney, host of “Firehouse Kitchen,” held court with fifth-graders at PS 52, Dongan Hills, to talk about preventing home (and kitchen) fire disasters in honor of Burn Awareness Week.
Marc Tempesta, RN, who serves as the administrative director of the Regional Burn Center at Staten Island University Hospital, was on hand to answer questions about burns, as well as misconceptions about treatment.
“Commonly, people think to put ice on a burn,” said Tempesta. “It restricts blood flow to the area and can actually deepen the burn.”
Cooney, a retired FDNY member, quizzed the youngsters on what to do in various situations, such as extinguishing oven and trash fires. He then picked two students to help him demonstrate making chocolate-covered skewered pieces of fruit, dusted with fresh coconut slivers.
