A sunken fishing trawler off Sandy Hook sparked a maritime search by the Coast Guard and the NYPD on Tuesday, authorities said. A witness said the 40-foot trawler was taking on water in New Jersey’s Sandy Hook Channel, about two miles north of the peninsula around 4:30 p.m., according to a spokeswoman for the U.S. Coast Guard’s New York attachment. The vessel was submerged when the Coast Guard, aided by the NYPD, FDNY and New Jersey State Police, arrived, the spokeswoman said.
It was not immediately clear if there was anyone on board the boat. Authorities were using sonar to determine the location of the sunken boat, the spokeswoman said.
NYPD divers were on scene waiting to search the wreckage once the ship is located, the spokeswoman said.
No one has reported a missing vessel in the area, authorities said. Anyone with information on the trawler or its owner is asked to contact the Coast Guard.
