For the Record

Chief Leader – February 24, 2015

In what is being billed as McMayhem in Midtown, Fire Department boxers will be taking on brawlers from the Irish National Police Force, accompanied by a top featherweight contender from the Emerald Isle, March 14 in what FDNY Bravest boxing team president Bobby McGuire calls the first pro-am boxing event ever held at Madison Square Garden.

The Irish-themed evening will feature the FDNY Emerald Society Pipes and Drums leading the department’s boxing team into the ring prior to its bouts with the Garda Siochann’ Boxing Club for what they’re calling the 2015 Transatlantic Championship.

Once the amateur fighters have finished their business, Firefighter Will “Power” Rosinsky will be marking his return to the ring against Paul Gonsalves after a layoff. A four-time Gold Gloves champion, the light-heavyweight since turning pro has compiled a 17-2 record, with his losses coming at the hands of former middleweight champ Kelly Pavlik and the still-undefeated Edwin Rodriguez.

And the main event will feature the pride of Dublin, featherweight title contender Patrick “The Punisher” Hyland, whose only loss in 30 bouts came against WBA champ Javier Fortuna.

Mr. McGuire said that The Bravest boxing team will be donating funds from the event to Building Homes for Heroes, an organization that builds mortgage-free handicapped-accessible homes for veterans who return from overseas with severe injuries. The team has already given more than $100,000 to veterans’ charities and will donate another $20,000 to BHH at FDNY headquarters in downtown Brooklyn March 5.

Tickets for the fights start at $35 and go to $100 for ringside seats and can be purchased through Ticketmaster or the Garden box office. Those seeking further details can check fdnyboxing@aol.com.
