Firefighters rescued two teenagers trapped on the ice after going for a Valentine’s day stroll on Little Neck Bay. Fire officials say they received calls about the pair around 5 p.m. Saturday
According to the FDNY, they were about 300 to 400 feet from the shore when they became stranded.
Mary Marino-Piscina, who lives along the bay, told NY1 that the teens appeared to be walking from one shore to the other when they found themselves in trouble.
“As I looked on the bay, I saw children, teenagers walking out onto the water,” she said. “They were coming from across, as you can see, and they were hitting soft spots where I think one boy fell in.”
Sources say the teen that fell in was quickly helped back out by the other one.
This was not the first ice rescue this year for the FDNY. A little more than two weeks ago, firefighters pulled an 11-year-old boy to safety after he tried to skate on the Bronx River.
Also in January, firefighters rescued a man who fell into the lake in Central Park.
Following the latest rescue, Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro released a statement that read, in part, “Venturing onto the ice of New York City’s rivers and waterways is dangerous. I urge all New Yorkers to stay off the ice for their safety, and for the safety of all FDNY members who respond to these emergencies.”
