Drivers would start seeing red under a new bill being introduced this week by a city councilman. The proposal would require the city to paint curbs red to mark no-parking zones around fire hydrants and bus stops.
Sponsor Vincent Gentile (D-Brooklyn) said the move would spare motorists from tickets when they unknowingly park too close to a hydrant.
“It becomes a guessing game for the motorist that results in a ‘gotcha’ type of ticket,” he said.
Drivers face a $115 ticket for parking within 15 feet on either side of a hydrant, or between a bus stop sign and the next parking sign on the block.
“You have to estimate how far you are. You guess, and many times you still get a summons,” Gentile said. “It’s nonsense, it really is.”
With red paint, “there’s no question whether you’re in the prohibited zone or you’re not,” he said.
He hasn’t determined how much it would cost to paint thousands of spots across the city.
A spokesman for the Department of Transportation, which would be charged with applying the paint under the bill, said the agency would review the measure.
