A pair of probationary firefighters rescued an unconscious, 250-pound man from a room filled with black smoke in Midtown, police said. The man, about 50, was trapped behind a window gate in his smoke-filled apartment on the first floor of a building on E. 37th St. at 11:40 p.m. Monday, authorities said.

Firefighters busted the gate, and probationary firefighter Johnpatrick Wylie, of Ladder 7, climbed into the apartment.

“I knew the guy was in there. We only had a few minutes before the CO2 gets to him and takes his life,” Wylie said.

Fellow probie Leanardo Williams, of Ladder 2, helped hoist the 250-pound man out of the room.
