Grillmasters from the NYPD and FDNY will match their culinary skills during theBattle of the Badges cook-off at Resorts World Casino New York City on Sunday, Sept. 18, from noon to 5 p.m.
And the public will sample the fruits of their labor.
Retired FDNY Firefighter Ray Cooney, star of the PBS television show “Firehouse Kitchen,” will host the event, which is expected to draw at least 20 chefs. Queens Deputy Borough President Melva Miller headlines the judging panel along with Jamaica YMCA Executive Director Cedric Dew, and George Lamond, the singer and entertainer.
This friendly food fest is the main feature of the second annual Queens South Community Day, which is expected to attract thousands of people – and stomachs – to the South Jamaica gaming venue. In addition to the culinary competition, attendees will be able to partake in carnival games, face-painting, bouncy houses, and rock climbing. Trucks selling cotton candy, popcorn, and other delectables will also be on hand.
Khalid Baylor (in photo below right with his son), who turns out of Engine Co. 35/Ladder Co. 14 in East Harlem, won last year’s inaugural Battle of the Badges with his Tennessee apple-smoked rib with sides of apple coleslaw and roasted sweet potato. He won a Weber grill and a trip to Resorts World Bimini in the Bahamas.
NYPD Bomb Squad Technician Detective Richard Henderson was the runner-up for his chicken scarpariello, while NYPD Highway Patrol Officer Ed Behringer took third place with his Cajun-spiced fillet of red snapper with pineapple salsa, basmati rice, sautéed escarole, and grilled scallions.
