STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The now-28-year-old Staten Islander was sitting in his car seat in the back of his parent’s car when he saw a firetruck race pass — lights flashing and sirens blaring — and knew that he wanted it to be him on the back of the truck.
He was 4-years-old at the time.
It’s his earliest memory but he knew, even at such a young age, that being a firefighter was what he was going to do with his life.
“I was obsessed,” said Robert, who asked that his real name be withheld for this story. “I had firetruck sheets on my bed as a kid, I had the pajamas, I pretended to put out fires in my living room and my bedroom was the firehouse.”
