FDNY names Lillian Bonsignore as new Chief of EMS, first woman to get 4-stars

On May 7, 2019, Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro appointed two veteran EMS Chiefs to the top ranks in the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services – Lillian Bonsignore as Chief of EMS and Alvin Suriel as Assistant Chief of EMS. Chief Bonsignore, a 28-year veteran who most recently served as Chief of EMS Academy, will now supervise 4,100 EMT’s, Paramedics, EMS Officers, and civilian employees in the EMS Bureau, and will be responsible for overseeing operations, planning, strategic initiatives, and logistics. Two veteran EMS chiefs rose to the top ranks of the FDNY’s Emergency Medical Services Tuesday.

Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro appointed Lillian Bonsignore as head of EMS, making her the first woman to achieve a 4-star rank. She will supervise roughly 4,500 EMTs and paramedics as well as officers in EMS.
