FDNY searching for ‘nut’ who went on Manhattan arson spree

A firebug randomly set at least nine blazes inside restaurants and apartment buildings in Greenwich Village and Midtown in less than three days, FDNY Fire Marshals said Tuesday.

“The guy’s a nut,” an FDNY source said. “He appears to be targeting businesses randomly.”

The prolific pyromaniac’s spree began Sunday, when he allegedly slipped into four Midtown restaurants and sparked blazes inside bathroom trash cans, according to FDNY officials.

On Sunday, he allegedly lit fires at Pret A Manger on Sixth Avenue and West 41st Street, Hummus & Pita on Eighth Avenue and West 40th Street and Famous Famiglia Pizza on Eighth Avenue and West 34th Street along with a nearby McDonald’s. He also struck somewhere inside Penn Station that day, according to officials.
