Terrorism Suspected In Tribeca Truck Attack: Sources Shared from the Tribeca-FiDi, NY Patch

TRIBECA, NY — At least six people were killed and more injured when a truck sped down a bike path near the West Side Highway, crashing into cyclists, pedestrians and another vehicle before its driver exited the vehicle and displayed what appeared to be a gun, sources and witnesses said.

Police sources told Patch the attack was being treated as terrorism.

The truck driver entered the bike path on West Street a few blocks north of Chambers Street shortly after 3 p.m. and drove down it hitting multiple people, the NYPD confirmed.

The truck crashed and the driver got out shooting what appeared to be a gun, sources said. Law enforcement sources said the driver was yelling “Allahu Akbar!” — which means “God is great!” in Arabic.

The truck driver was shot by police and is in custody, the NYPD announced. Police said that the gun the driver displayed was fake. A joint terrorism task force has been set up to lead the investigation into the truck rampage.
