Tunnel to Towers Run 2017: NYC street closures

tunnel-to-tower-2On Sunday, the 2017 Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Run will take place in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The 5K run and walk is held each year on the last Sunday in September.

The event is held to honor firefighter Stephen Stiller, a member of the New York City Fire Department who lost his life while trying to save others during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

The 5K run was created to honor Stiller’s final footsteps from Battery Park tunnel to the Twin Towers while carrying 60 pounds of gear. The event also pays homage to FDNY firefighters and first responders who lost their lives on that day.

Tunnel to Towers began in 2002 and has steadily become one of the biggest 5K runs in the country because of its cause. This year, the Tunnel to Towers Run will raise money for those who were affected by Hurricane Harvey and Irma.
