The fire quickly escalated to five alarms. Investigators believe the fire started in the kitchen cooking area of a ground floor deli and then traveled undetected up a shaft to the roof. Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said five firefighters were injured, none seriously. “The bad news is that many people will have lost their possessions”. “I’m just so relieved, such a relief”. “I showed the Firefighters a picture of my dog, Finnegan, and they took my keys and went upstairs to the apartment to get him”. “I’m so happy and relieved that he’s OK. I was anxious about the smoke”. There was heavy smoke on the roof of the building in addition to the fire. One firefighter was treated for minor injuries, according to the FDNY, and 15 others underwent medical evaluations, along with one civilian, for possible injuries. “Tons of firefighters. My apartment filled with smoke”. “I’m so happy”, she told CBS2 through tears. MTA officials said R and W trains are now skipping the 8th Street-NYU stop. Southbound trains were bypassing the 8th Street NYU station. Witnesses have reported that yellow smoke is filling the air from the still smouldering building and emergency services have blocked off Broadway causing major traffic delays.
