DUNELLEN — Two New Jersey teenage girls were among the 22 people injured when a speeding car slammed into pedestrians in Times Square Thursday, leaving one young woman dead.

The girls, who are seniors at Dunellen High School, were taken to a hospital for unknown injuries, according to Dunellen School Superintendent Gene Mosley in a statement.

“They were rushed to Bellevue Hospital where they received immediate medical attention for their injuries,” Mosley said. “Both girls — accompanied by family members — remain in the hospital under doctor’s care.”  Mosley did not identify the injured students.

Dunellen High School Principal Paul Lynch addressed the faculty Friday morning to “make them aware of the latest updates on the situation,” according to the statement. Then, the school held an assembly to update the student body and “dispel the rumors that were swirling around social media.”

Counselors were also made available throughout the day for students who needed them, Mosley said.

“These girls — members of the Dunellen High School Class of 2017 — are in the thoughts and prayers of everyone in the Dunellen educational community as well as the community at large,” said Mosley. “We wish them Godspeed for a complete recovery.”

Shortly before noon on Thursday, 26-year-old Richard Rojas, of the Bronx, was driving a maroon Honda Accord when he allegedly made a quick U-turn onto 42nd Street, drove up the sidewalk filled with pedestrians for three blocks and then slammed into a pole.

The crash appears to be an accident

The crash killed an 18-year-old tourist, Alyssa Elsman, of Portage, Michigan, and injured her 13-year-old sister. Four of the injured are in critical condition; three are in serious condition. Fifteen of the injuries are “less serious,” the FDNY said in a tweet.

According to a report by the Associated Press, Rojas said he wanted to “kill them all, ” and that police should have shot him to stop him, according to a prosecutor. Rojas did not enter a plea, the report said.

Rojas briefly appeared for a court appearance on Friday where prosecutors detailed a felony murder charge.

The report also said that Rojas — a U.S. Navy veteran who enlisted in 2011 — told officers he had smoked marijuana laced with PCP, according to a criminal complaint. He has two prior convictions for drunk driving, including in 2008 and 2015, according to CNN. According to the Associated Press, Navy records show that in 2013 he spent two months in a naval prison in Charleston, South Carolina, though the reason is not known.
