JAMAICA, N.Y.—On March 16, 2017, the York College Athletics program welcomed the FDNY Office of Recruitment & Retention to the campus in an effort to educate York student-athletes about a potential career with the FDNY.

Approximately 40 student-athletes attended the event, where they participated in several FDNY drills. They included forcible entry, hose drag, equipment carry, donning of bunker gear, and dummy drag.  Students also learned about the benefits of pursuing a career with the FDNY.

In the forcible entry drill, students had to slam a tire with a sledgehammer to mimic breaking down a door. In the dummy drag, the York athletes were timed as they dragged a 175-pound dummy across the room.  The hose drag was a relay event, in which students pulled a hose to one end of the room and back.

“The training was a lot of fun,” said men’s basketball player Jean Joseph. “I am thinking about pursuing a career in the FDNY now.”

“We were extremely excited and fortunate to have partnered with the FDNY and York College Veteran Affairs to host a FDNY Mobile Academy event,” said York College Director of Athletics & Recreation Deneé Barracato. “I’d like to thank the FDNY Office of Recruitment & Retention, specifically Adam Lessuck and the FDNY Firefighters for their service and for demonstrating their bravery and knowledge with our students and student-athletes. I am certain this event left an long-lasting impression on them which includes an appreciation for what they do on a daily basis for the safety of our community.”
