STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Two children were safely removed from a Mariners Harbor home Tuesday evening after a fire broke out.

The fire at 40 Lockman Loop began at approximately 5:07 p.m., a spokesman for the FDNY said.

A neighbor, Delroy Lewis, was coming home when he saw the flames in the front window of the house, he said.

“I was banging on the door yelling ‘FIRE FIRE,'” Lewis said. “The kids opened the door, I forced myself inside, and I got them out.”

Lewis determined that no one else was in the house, and the Fire Department arrived on the scene. They brought the fire under control by 5:40 p.m.

The two children, who Lewis said are around five-years-old, were examined by EMS, and did not require transport. A spokesman for the FDNY confirmed that there were no other patients from the incident.

The house where the fire began was almost completely burned out, but several neighbors in the attached housing complex said they would be able to return to their homes.

The American Red Cross provided emergency housing and financial assistance for three adults affected by the fire, according to a spokeswoman for the organization.

They also provided referrals to a family of two adults and three children who were able to self-relocate for the night, she said.
