Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro Promotes 76 FDNY Fire Officers

November 3, 2016

On Thursday, November 3, Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro presided over the ceremony promoting 76 FDNY Fire Officers at Brooklyn College.

“We are the busiest Fire Department in the world, and for that reason, we rely heavily on our Fire Officers to ensure the safety of our members,” said Commissioner Nigro. “Last year alone, we responded to more than 1.7 million emergencies and our call volume is ever increasing. But despite that fact, we continue to reduce the number of fire deaths in our city.”

Six Lieutenants will be promoted to the rank of Captain, 30 Firefighters promoted to Lieutenant, four promoted to Fire Marshals to Supervising Fire Marshal Level II, four Fire Marshals promoted to Supervising Fire Marshal Level I, and 32 Firefighters promoted to Fire Marshals.

“We always train to be better. I’ve had the opportunity to work with the finest Officers and Firefighters this job has to offer,” said FDNY Captain William Butler.  “I learned a lot and hope to pass that on. Today is a proud day.”

“To be a Lieutenant means being entrusted with the responsibility to watch over and care for the members I’m working with,” said FDNY Lieutenant James R. Denniston. “It also means making sure I make good decisions to keep them safe so we all can go home to our families. We all do this job because we genuinely love to help people. I look forward to new challenges as well as continuing to learn and grow professionally.”

After 17 years with the Fire Department, FDNY Lieutenant William Hickey of Ladder Company 120 looks forward to mentoring the next generation of FDNY Fire Officers.

“The FDNY has so much pride, history and tradition. Getting on the rig with your company and heading out the door because somebody needs our help is what this job is all about,” said Lieutenant Hickey.  “I’m excited to have the chance to share the lessons that I’ve been fortunate enough to learn from some of the finest Firefighters and Officers in this Department.”

Chief of Department James E. Leonard highlighted the integral role FDNY Fire Officers play in the day to day operations at the department.

“Each of our newly promoted members knows this is not simply a 9 to 5 job, each of you is expected to lead others every second you’re in uniform, on-duty and off-duty as well,” said Chief Leonard. “The common threads throughout the FDNY’s 151-year history have been bravery and leadership – that is our reputation.”

The 76 FDNY Fire Officers are assigned to units throughout the city.
