FDNY fighting mattress fire in New Brighton

Update: The fire was brought under control, according to an FDNY post on Twitter made at 8:32 a.m.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The FDNY is fighting a mattress fire at an apartment building in New Brighton on Wednesday morning.

Firefighters from nine units extinguished the fire called at 8:13 a.m. in the basement of 32 Webster Ave., according to a spokesman for the FDNY/EMS.

A caller to 911 complained of smoke in her bedroom, according to a Fire Department source.

No one was injured in the fire that was brought under control at 8:32 a.m., the spokesman said.
