Update: The 37-year-old man who leaped from the span died at Richmond University Medical Center.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Authorities confirmed that a person jumped from the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge shortly after noon on Tuesday and was rushed to a hospital.

CPR was performed on the person who jumped. The patient, who was in cardiac arrest, was transported to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton. The patient’s condition was considered serious and life-threatening, said a spokesman for the FDNY/EMS.

Authorities gave conflicting reports about whether the person lived or succumbed to the injuries suffered in the leap, which emergency radio transmissions indicated was from the lower level westbound near the Brooklyn side of the span.

The jump from the span was reported at 12:21 p.m., according to the FDNY.

The right lane on the lower level heading toward Staten Island was closed for a time due to police activity, according to the MTA.

Personnel for EMS, FDNY Marine boats, NYPD Harbor Units and Aviation helicopters were among the many first responders who converged upon the scene by land, water and air.
