A half-dozen people were hurt in a massive blaze that swept through an apartment building and caused traffic delays in the Bronx Tuesday morning, fire officials say.

The blaze broke out in a fifth-floor apartment in the building on Andrews Avenue shortly after 2 a.m., officials say. Before long flames burst through the top of the Morris Heights building and smoke descended onto the surrounding streets.

The inferno was brought under control by the dozens of firefighters called to the scene at about 4 a.m.

Six people were injured in the fire, two of them seriously, although they were expected to survive. Two other people suffered minor injuries. A fifth person suffered unknown injuries and a firefighter hurt his leg, the FDNY said.

Fire officials were not sure Tuesday morning what caused the blaze. People nearby were asked to close their windows to avoid heavy smoke.

The smoke also caused traffic delays in the area, and buses were detoured around the site of the fire.
