One man was killed and several others, including firefighters, were injured in two separate incidents in Brooklyn early Friday morning, authorities said.
A fatal fire broke out at a high-rise building on W. 33rd Street in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Coney Island just before 3 a.m., fire officials said.
The blaze started on the 19th floor, and 78 firefighters responded to the call, officials said. The fire was extinguished about an hour later.
A 34-year-old man was found in one of the lower floors. Officials had previously said the man was 31-years-old. He was taken to Coney Island Hospital in critical condition, but died there a short time later, authorities said. A 55-year-old man was also taken to that hospital in serious condition.
Four firefighters suffered minor injures while fighting the fire, and were also taken to the hospital, officials said.
In a separate incident earlier in the morning, a four-alarm fire engulfed a three-story building on Hendrix St. in the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn, officials said.
That fire started at 1:07 a.m. and quickly escalated, fire officials said. About 170 firefighters responded to the scene and put out the fire out by 4 a.m., officials said.
One person was taken to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in critical condition, while another was taken to the same hospital in serious condition, authorities said. A firefighter suffered minor injuries and was taken to the same hospital, officials said.
Investigators have not yet determined what caused the fires, officials said.
