NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A worker at the Second Avenue Subway site suffered an injury underground and had to be hoisted to safety Wednesday afternoon.
The incident took place at around 4 p.m. at 83rd Street and Second Avenue.
The worker was about 100 feet below ground between two tunnels when a pipe fell on his leg, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said.
Deputy Fire Chief Anthony De Vita said part of the equipment the worker was using to clean the concrete shoot snapped and hit him in the leg.
Responding EMS and FDNY rescuers had to place the injured worker into a basket and hoist him to the surface with a crane.
The injured worker was taken to New York Hospital. He was listed in serious but stable condition, 1010 WINS’ Hollie Haerr reported.
Those who work at stores nearby said they feared the worst when they heard about the accident.
“You just heard a couple of people yelling ‘get help, get help,’” said Natalie Kraus.
Kraus said she and others watched as rescuers raised the worker up.
“He was in a basket and then they just brought him right outside and put him inside the ambulance,” she said.
Kraus told Haerr it looked like the worker was awake and talking when he was brought above ground.
